Liverpool are now required to defeat Napoli by a minimum of two goals next month at Anfield to avoid elimination from the Champions League after Paris Saint-Germain managed to inflict a third away defeat in Group C on the finalists of last season.
Liverpool Defeated by PSG
The goals during the first half from Neymar and Juan Bernat were more than enough to secure the win for PSG in the Champions League Round of 16 ahead of their game against Red Star Belgrade. Neymar also managed to overtake Kaka as the Brazilian with the highest tally of goals in the Champions League.
Liverpool had an extremely slow start, allowing PSG to take full control during the first half, which meant Bernat could easily capitalise where he managed to score a goal within 14 minutes of the game. With both Kylian Mbappe and Neymar returning from injury and in outstanding form, PSG managed to dominate the first half and double their lead after Neymar scored the second goal of the game after Cavani’s shot was blocked by Alisson Becker.
James Milner managed to pull one back for the Reds from the penalty spot but was unfortunately unable to score a second goal during the second half of the game. What’s quite surprising is that Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Mane was unusually ineffective during the game and as a result, the Reds are now required to defeat Napoli as group leaders by a two-goal margin to successfully make it through to the Round of 16 in the Champions League, 7 months after they lost the final to Real Madrid.
Verratti Dominated Liverpool in Midfield
Marco Verratti unfortunately missed Paris-Saint Germain’s 3-2 defeat earlier this season due to a suspension after receiving a red card against Real Madrid which left the midfield wide open. However, in the most recent match, he managed to show why he is so vital for the team, showcasing phenomenal performance that allowed him to completely control the match for the home side.
However, his recklessness surfaced again during the first half of the game when he received a yellow card on Joe Gomez. He’s unpredictable character is always going to be around and PSG needs to hope that his good side is present more than his ugly side to receive the desired impact going forward. His impact certainly showed during their match against Liverpool where he managed to pick passes and create the desired tempo for PSG.
Joe Gomez Completely Exposed
Liverpool has two rising stars, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez. However, they are both struggling in the Champions League this season due to the decisions made by Klopp. For instance, Gomez was given the unreasonable task of controlling Kylian Mbappe and Neymar on the left, and due to Neymar enjoying one of his better games this season, Gomez couldn’t do anything to stop him.
If Liverpool somehow make it through to the Round of 16 of the Champions League, Klopp needs to make a few changes to his team positions to avoid another defeat like this again.
