Usually, the new year brings loads of hope and of course a great deal of promise of greater days. However, for some of the best footballers in the world, 2019 represent a crossroad when it comes to their future. Let’s take a look at the best footballers and what the future will bring for them in 2019.
Mesut Ozil – Arsenal Midfielder
There’s no denying that 2018 started off brilliantly for Mesut Ozil at Arsenal where he was handed a lucrative extension until mid-2021. However, 2018 ended quite awful for the German superstar where Unai Emery constantly overlooked him. The lowest point for the player was when he was left out of the squad against their Tottenham defeat during the Carabao Cup due to tactical reasons. This is a clear sign that Ozil has no future left at the club. Arsenal will listen to various offers in January for Ozil. However, his wages of £300,000 a week will bring only a handful of takers.
Paul Pogba – Manchester United Midfielder
The midfielder for Manchester United has the opportunity to resurrect his career at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is currently the caretaker for the club after Jose Mourinho was fired. During his time as the reserve-team coach for United, Solskjaer took care of Pogba’s development and is a huge fan of the football star. Barcelona and Juventus are both interested in signing the World-Cup winner. However, after Mourinho left the club, the potential signings were ruled out for January. Manchester United are not prepared to sell him just yet. Unless the new manager wants him to go. Until then, Pogba will remain at United in the long term.
Eden Hazard – Chelsea Forward
Hazard is entering his last 18 months with Chelsea which will push the Belgian football star to make a decision on his future. The player is currently rejecting any attempts from Chelsea to sign a new contract and is looking very interested in signing with a club in Spain. Chelsea is already making plans for his departure by signing Christian Pulisic to replace him. Hazard is well aware that his next move is a crucial one and is likely to sign with Real Madrid who is very interested in the player once his contract comes to an end.
Alexis Sanchez – Manchester United Forward
Sanchez has endured a horrifying 2018 at Manchester United as a forward, scoring a mere 4 goals in a total of 30 appearances since he arrived in January from Arsenal. Sanchez is currently injured and will see the Mourinho sacking as a positive way to resurrect his career at Manchester United. However, he is required to make a good impression with the current caretaker if he wants to avoid getting transferred at the end of the season. Sanchez’s future is completely in his own hands. Should he manage to perform well at the current club, his future at Manchester United will be secure. However, at the age of 30, United will definitely cut their losses he if doesn’t improve.
